Well what do you know, New Moon, the latest movie from the Twilight Saga, brought in $140.7 million this past weekend in the US Box Office and a total of nearly $260 million worldwide ($258.8). That’s the third best opening weekend in the history of the US box office, with The Dark Knight ($158 million) and Spider-Man 3 ($151 million), being the top 1 and 2.

Now, did anyone really expect it to not to do well? The moment I heard there was going to be a sequel, I pretty much knew this movie was going to do well. I remember having this conversation with a co-worker, about whether or not Ninja Assassin can match New Moon’s opening weekend. It would blow my mind if Ninja Assassin made in its opening weekend as much as New Moon made in one day, a new box office record, $69.9 million.

With at least one more movie lined up and a fourth to follow (deals are being worked out), the franchise is going to continue to make massive piles of money. While this weekend was great for the Twilight Saga and fan(girls), it probably won’t be able to sustain the money making pace it’s on, so expect a huge drop off next weekend. But I highly doubt the studio, Summit Entertainment, really cares how much more they make, they’ve already covered their budget ($50 million) and then some.

While I didn’t go see New Moon, I could definitely see the appeal in the movie. In the mean time, here’s a great review of the movie from Wired. It’s a perspective that I have yet to see on other review sites.

Did you go see New Moon? Did you enjoy the movie or did you think it was all hype?

I read the Wired article — very good, insightful stuff. A lot of it is what I had issues with when reading the books.

Something else to note from that article…the comments! WOW. People get so heated! I mean, I am all about vampires, but I think some people need to step away and realize that it’s…a movie. Entertainment. That’s all!

Those are the kind of people we need on this site. If wired hadn’t blocked me from commenting, I would have left a comment with a link here. haha but yeah people are crazy about their vampires.

About SwanDiary

Swan Diary is an online community dedicated to all things vampire within society's current and past culture. Book series, TV shows, movies... you name it. If it sucks, (in a good way), we'll cover it. Swan Diary is an haven for swans -- not the ugly duckling fairytale swan, but swan as a vampire term for, "Human that loves vampires." However, we have no qualms if you happen to be a vampire who loves humans.
