I love Richelle Mead.

Who’s Richelle Mead? What do you mean who’s Richelle Mead? Richelle Mead is only like Stephenie Meyer, but better. For all you people out there who only know the Twilight series, let me introduce Vampire Academy, a New York Times bestselling series by none other than Richelle Mead.

The Vampire Academy series is none other than my guilty pleasure. Mead puts together amazing writing skills and intricate plotlines with fierce vampires and a too-hot Russian accent, resulting in me hiding under my covers at 3 in the morning.

Set in a surreal modern-day world, vampires are alive and in hiding, but they aren’t just called vampires. There are good ones and bad ones (expected). The good vampires are called Moroi and although they need blood to survive, they only take it from willing humans without killing them. On the other hand, there are evil vampires called Strigoi who are basically everything that is negative in the world. Strigoi kill humans not merely for food, but also for pleasure because they’re twisted, twisted people. And to add another species into the mix, there are the Dhampirs—half-human, half-Moroi, blessed with the best of both worlds. Dhampirs are trained from a young age to become guardians for the Moroi, especially Moroi royalty.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I haven’t even mentioned the main character Rose Hathaway or too-hot-even-as-words-on-a-page Guardian Dimitri Belikov.

Well, apparently Vampire Academy might just be your next Harry Potter meets Twilight, because Don Murphy (the producer of Transformers) has just teamed up with Michael Preger on a feature version of the six-part saga, and I am excited. Since Transformers was a great action clip, I’m expecting awesome graphics from the movie (aka none of that Twilight stuff).

If you haven’t started reading the books yet, I’d suggest you hurry because if there were times when you’ve sat in front of your computer screen wondering what was missing from your life, it’s Richelle Mead and Vampire Academy.

About SwanDiary

Swan Diary is an online community dedicated to all things vampire within society's current and past culture. Book series, TV shows, movies... you name it. If it sucks, (in a good way), we'll cover it. Swan Diary is an haven for swans -- not the ugly duckling fairytale swan, but swan as a vampire term for, "Human that loves vampires." However, we have no qualms if you happen to be a vampire who loves humans.
