This week’s episode of the CW’s hit series, Vampire Diaries, was entitled Plan B. Sadly, the title this time around is more of an omen than anything else, but it also means our dear vamp Katherine plans to stay. Read on for what went down this episode.

What better way to start an episode after a two-week break than by showing some hot makeout sessions? That’s right, this episode started out with a double bang–Stefan and Elena having light-hearted kissing on one side, and Katherine and Mason with some sexy dark smooching on the other. Mason still hasn’t given Katherine the moon stone yet, which is pretty odd considering he believes she loves him, but hey, it’s nice knowing there’s a little part of him that doesn’t completely trust her. As for Stefan and Elena, their makeout session this morning was overheard by Jenna–laugh out loud and so much for secrecy.

On the other hand, Jeremy’s trying to be biffles with the other Salvatore brother, but Damon isn’t too keen on letting him in vamp club. Still, Jeremy has some pretty invaluable information regarding the Lockwood curse, and that’s what eventually gets him the pass in. Alaric comes back, and the mystery of the moon stone is somewhat less murky. Apparently the moon stone can release the Lockwoods from their curse. Jeremy is given the mission of obtaining the moon stone, but little does he know Tyler had already given the stone to Mason last episode.

Elena and Bonnie have a little heart to hear about Caroline, who isn’t helping plan the Lockwood masquerade because she’s still tending to her mother Liz. The mother/daughter tension in this episode was one of the most sensitive moments in this entire episode. Caroline finally gets to talk to her mother like she’s always wanted, and for that brief moment of time, Liz acted like a mother and not the sheriff of the county. Even after her mother finally gets to the ultimate realization that she doesn’t care if her daughter’s a vampire, Caroline has to make the ultimate sacrifice. With the vervain all out of Liz’s system, her own daughter compels her to forget everything that’s happened, crying all the while.

After a bit of interrogation and whatnot, Jeremy realizes that Tyler had already given the moon stone to Mason. Now this is where Bonnie comes into the picture. She happened to touch Mason at the Lockwood house and saw a vision of Katherine and Mason making out. Let’s put two and two here together, alright? Mason gets captured and Damon gets to live the time of his life. In a very cringe-worthy turn of events, Damon threatens Mason with a werewolf’s worst nightmare: wolfsbane. Think vervain for werewolves. After getting the location of the moon stone from Mason, Damon then proceeds to kill the poor guy by pulling his heart out of his chest. Ew, yeah.

Stefan goes to find the moon stone located in the well by the Lockwood ruins, but he just so happened to jump into a pond of vervain and gets very horribly bruised. Elena goes in to rescue him and feeds him her blood, yadda yadda fun stuff they all survive. Damon, being the heartbroken Katherine-ex that he is, decides to call up Katherine on Mason’s cell phone, and boy did he get an angry vamp. In one of the best scenes in the entire episode, Katherine tells Damon that she had a Plan B, a Plan C, and so down the alphabet. You work that attitude, girl. Damon got owned, and I just loved every minute of that scene.

On an evil vengeful rampage, Katherine gets Aunt Jenna to stab herself with a knife (yeah, she’s pretty much been under Katherine’s compulsion the whole entire time, scary). Elena gets scared because she never expected her plan to fail, and so breaks up with Stefan. Insert really heart-breaking moment here. With Mason dead, Katherine is still in need of a werewolf, so her Plan B is to get Matt to egg Tyler on until Tyler kills Matt, effectively transforming Tyler into werewolf number two.

Stay tuned for the next episode of Vampire Diaries, Masquerade, to air this Thursday on the CW, 7/8c.
