The Vampire Diaries’ Dinner Party is one dinner party you should probably miss. Miss as in, if you were personally invited to a real dinner party thrown by the real Damon Salvatore with Elijah, John, Alaric, Damon’s reporter lady friend and Jenna. The Vampire Diaries Dinner Party episode however, was something you probably shouldn’t have missed because of it’s nonstop intensity. (Spoiler Alert Warning!)

While Damon certainly doesn’t fit the type to host dinner parties or social events, the real reason behind the dinner party was to kill Elijah. With a big house, a handful of guests to distract each other from the actual killing, Damon had faith in his plan not being a bad plan but a “poorly executed awesome one.” He was definitely correct about his plans to kill Elijah at the dinner party being a poorly executed awesome plan. Turns out, the method for killing with the dagger dipped in the specific tree ashes wasn’t to be trusted. As Elena read entries from the old Gilbert journal at the beginning of the episode, we find out that an immortal wielding the dagger dies as they kill an original. Enter Alaric to warn Damon. At this point, with Jenna around and their already fragile relationship state, it didn’t seem like Alaric had anything crazy up his sleeve.

That is, until he crept behind Elijah at the dinner table and stabbed him. Elijah was stored in the Salvatore dungeon, only to escape. Apparently, the directions for killing an original didn’t stop there — Elena continued to read on in the Gilbert Journal that the dagger has to stay there. Seriously, who leaves their daggers behind?

To respond to the breach of the Elena/Elijah deal, Elijah of course moves on to the lakehouse to capture Elena. Elena threatens to kill herself with a dagger, causing Stefan to heal her by his blood, thus turning her into a vampire so that she’s no longer of use to Elijah. And then she ends up stabbing herself, falling into Elijah’s arms. And then she whips out the dagger and kills Elijah. Stefan and Damon come to the rescue to finally put Elijah back in the dungeon.

Despite Elijah’s death, Catherine isn’t stuck in her tomb for all eternity. That was pretty much a lie told by Catherine. The last scene of the episode was her offering to help Damon on his mission to destroy Klaus. And no, Klaus has yet to make an appearance.

On the witches front — Jonas was upset over Bonnie intruding on Jonas’ pursuit to gain his daughter back from Klaus. For her “own good,” Jonas takes away Bonnie’s powers.

A power-less Bonnie shouldn’t last very long — what’s Vampire Diaries without it’s resident witch? Another question that comes to mind is, is Elijah really dead? What’s Catherine’s deal?

Hopefully we’ll find out in the next episode.
